Overview

Ledger Live is Ledger’s official desktop and mobile application that connects to Ledger hardware wallets (Ledger Nano S Plus, Ledger Nano X, and others) and provides a user-friendly interface for managing cryptocurrencies. Ledger Live helps you initialize your device, create or restore a recovery phrase, install blockchain-specific apps, add accounts, send and receive assets, and access supported services like staking or swaps. The security model keeps private keys on the hardware device while Ledger Live handles account presentation, transaction construction, and broadcasting.

Before you start — preparation checklist

• Purchase your Ledger device from an official source (ledger.com or authorized resellers).
• Use a trusted computer or mobile device with an updated OS and browser.
• Have a secure offline place to record your recovery phrase (paper backup or metal plate).
• Ensure you have a data-capable USB cable or Bluetooth (for Ledger Nano X) if applicable.

Important: Never share your recovery phrase with anyone and never enter it into a website. Ledger employees will never ask for your recovery phrase.

Step 1 — Go to Ledger.com/start

Open a secure browser and navigate to ledger.com/start. This official landing page detects your device model and provides tailored download links for Ledger Live and the step-by-step onboarding workflow. Verify the HTTPS lock and domain in your address bar before downloading any installers.

Step 2 — Download and install Ledger Live

Choose the correct Ledger Live installer for your platform. For mobile, download the Ledger Live app from the official Apple App Store or Google Play Store. Install the app and grant only necessary permissions. On desktop, follow the installer prompts and launch Ledger Live once installation completes.

Step 3 — Initialize your Ledger device

When you power on a new Ledger device, follow the on-device instructions to either Set up as new device or Restore from recovery phrase. If setting up as new:

1. Create a device PIN directly on the hardware wallet—this prevents unauthorized local access.
2. The device will display your recovery phrase (typically 24 words) one word at a time. Write them down in order on the recovery sheet included in the box or another secure medium.
3. Confirm your recovery phrase on the device when prompted to ensure accuracy.

If restoring, input the words when requested on the device. Never type your phrase into a computer or mobile app.

Step 4 — Pair Ledger Live with your device

Open Ledger Live and select Get started. Choose whether to create a new device or restore an existing one and follow the guided steps. When prompted, connect your Ledger device via USB (or Bluetooth for Nano X) and allow the connection on the device screen. Ledger Live will detect the device and complete pairing.

Step 5 — Install blockchain apps

Ledger devices use small applications for each blockchain protocol (Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, etc.). Install the apps you need through Ledger Live’s Manager tab. Note that device storage is finite — remove unused apps to free space. Installing an app does not expose your private keys; the app simply enables the device to understand and sign transactions for that blockchain.

Step 6 — Add accounts

After you install the necessary apps, go to the Accounts tab in Ledger Live and add accounts for each currency. Ledger Live will derive addresses from your device and display balances. For tokens and derivatives, ensure the underlying chain app (e.g., Ethereum) is installed and up to date.

Security best practices

• Never share your recovery phrase: It’s the single source of truth for account recovery. Ledger staff will never ask for it.
• Verify addresses on the device: Always confirm the destination address on your Ledger device screen before approving a transaction.
• Use firmware updates: Apply firmware updates when available via Ledger Live; they may contain security patches and feature improvements.
• Store backups securely: Use fireproof and waterproof options for long-term storage of recovery material.
• Be cautious of phishing: Only use official Ledger domains and double-check links in emails or messages.

Using Ledger Live features

Send & Receive

To receive funds, select the account and click Receive. Ledger Live will display the address; verify it on your device before sharing. To send funds, initiate the transaction in Ledger Live, confirm amounts and fees, and approve the transaction on the device.

Portfolio & history

Ledger Live aggregates balances and transaction history across all added accounts. Customize the display currency and time ranges in settings.

Swap & Staking

Ledger Live integrates with trusted partners to enable in-app swaps and staking. These services are optional and run through third-party providers; review fees and terms before proceeding.

Troubleshooting common issues

• Device not recognized: Try a different USB cable or port; reboot the computer and device. For Bluetooth issues with Nano X, ensure the device is paired in your OS Bluetooth settings.
• App installation failed: Free up space by removing unused apps and try again.
• Missing funds: Ensure you added the correct account and network. For tokens, ensure the token is supported and the corresponding app is installed.
• Recovery concerns: If you suspect your recovery phrase was exposed, move funds to a new wallet generated with a secure device immediately.
